For a timely grade your paper must be uploaded to Turnitin a Word document and emailed to me as a WORD attachment (No Links). 2. YOU ARE ONLY TO USE THE SOURCES WE READ IN CLASS TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. Any sources beyond the course readings will result in an automatic Zero for the question. The only exceptions are the questions that ask you to find articles to discuss. 3. You must put all your sources into a properly formatted ASA reference list. 4. All questions require a combination of direct quotations and paraphrases of the reading material you have used PROPERLY CITED and your own analysis and conclusions. (Please note that Weber’s essay on Bureaucracy is an article in an edited book. When you print out the entire article all the information is at the beginning of the handout and on your syllabus) 5. No cover pages. 6. On the top of the first page put your name, day and time of class 7. On each page put your name, day and time of class and page number. 8. This is to be in exam format. All questions are to be repeated, then answered, section by section. The rewriting of the question does not count as part of your answer. 9. This paper must be uploaded as a WORD DOCUMENT in 11 point type, not copied and pasted into Turnitin. 10. Question 1 Required of all students Even a brief glance at a major newspaper reveals a wide range of social problems. Choose one social problem. Then locate an article from a newspaper, magazine, or the internet consistent with your social problem. The article must be dated after Novembeer 1, 2021. Relate your answer in 4a to an article from the Wall Street Journal or The New York Times on bureaucracy and the Coronavirus response. He insisted that sociology must study the causes and functions of social facts. 6A. Define “social fact” Use both an appropriate quote (properly cited directly from The Rules of Sociological Method) Durkheim’s words can be found on pages 31-163 and your own analysis. 6B. Give examples from modern day life (not those given by Durkheim in Rules) 6C. What does not cause social facts? 7. The conclusion of Durkheim’s Rules of Sociological Method is Durkheim’s statement about the future value of well done sociological research and the values that underly all science. This is the era of fake news and junk science. Find an article, or collection of articles from the NYT, WSJ, or news source, (if you are not sure check with me before you write) on the issue of good facts or data. Choose something published after November 1, 2021. Would Durkheim , according to the discussion in the conclusion, agree with what the authors say about good data?
